There are a number of popular misconceptions about washlets and bidets. Read on to learn how the facts are a lot different to the fiction surrounding them.

1. Bidets are really messy

Modern washlets & bidets fully adjustable in terms of their position and the strength/pressure of the water, so you can be sure it will give you the best, most comfortable experience. Although popular comedies like to show it soaking the user, in reality there is nothing further from the truth – there is no jet propulsion of the water and you can select from two different pressure levels to suit yourself. Since all the spraying happens under the butt, any mess created simply goes down into the bowl.

2. Bidets don't clean better than wiping with toilet paper

The simple answer to this question is yes. Not only is it a lot cleaner to use water rather than rubbing with toilet paper, it is also a lot less irritating on the sensitive skin in that area. The toilet paper will remove solid chunks, but it effectively smears the poop and will not actually clean the area in the way that water does. As author and TED speaker Rose George said, "Toilet paper moves s**t, but it doesn't remove it. You wouldn't shower with a dry towel; why do you think that dry toilet paper cleans you?"

3. It must be cheaper to just use toilet paper

Firstly, not all toilet paper is created equal and that is reflected in the price. On average one roll of toilet paper costs around $3. In the US alone 34 million rolls are used each day – a total cost of over $100 million every single day! Obviously the initial cost of the EcoJet bidet is more than a roll of toilet paper, but it can cut your paper use significantly and save you money over time. In fact, if you choose to dry using toilet paper, you will still save 50% of the usual costs of buying toilet paper. If you choose to dry pat with a dedicated towel (just like you do after a shower), your toilet paper usage – and the cost – will be reduced to zero.

There are other issues around toilet paper and “flushable” wipes (companies claim their wipes are flushable…yes they go down, but they clog the pipes and sewage systems) too which go above and beyond the question of cost. These products can cause blockages in sewer systems, which are very expensive to clear – your tax money shouldn’t be going to an easily avoidable issue. The environmental cost of constantly using enormous amounts of toilet paper and wipes could be eliminated if every home chose to purchase a Ecojet.

4. Bidets take up too much space

Many people still think of the washlet system as a separate unit that takes up floor space and duplicates plumbing. Not anymore! At just 5.9 inches (15 cm) long in its compact state, the EcoJet is a handheld, plumbing-less device that can be taken with you anywhere you go. It’s so small that it can fit in your pocket or small purse. The size of your bathroom is no longer a factor in having a clean and healthy butt!

5. I don’t have room in my budget for a bidet

On average, washlets cost over $600 to purchase and install, but you don’t have to invest this much to enjoy a cleansing after dropping a deuce. In honor of the Environment Conservation Month, the EcoJet Bidet is currently on sale for $99 with free shipping. In under a year, you’ll have paid off the EcoJet with the amount of toilet paper you would have purchased, and even earlier if you share it with your family and/or friends.

6. Bidets are for women only

Ecojet Bidets are great for feminine hygiene, especially during menstruation, pregnancy or immediately after childbirth. But this does not mean that they are ‘just for women’. It is also very beneficial, in terms of health and hygiene, for men, children and the elderly. In short, it can keep anyone hygienically clean and healthy regardless of age or gender.

7. Water alone won’t keep you clean

It is a popular misconception that you must use soap in order to be properly clean. In fact, the regular use of soap on the sensitive genital area can cause drying, infection, inflammation and other problems. Medically, the advice is to clean the area using warm, clean water. This is exactly what the EcoJet Bidet can provide. The EcoJet is compatible with both warm water (up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit or 40 degrees Celsius) and cold water (if preferred). It will provide you with a gentle and effective wash that is more than adequate to cleanse after using the bathroom.

8. The idea of a bidet makes me uncomfortable

Many people think bidets and washlets are weird but you have likely seen them and perhaps even used them when you have traveled abroad, especially if you were in Japan. Globally, many areas have some sort of device in that uses water to get you clean down there.

In the US, these devices are still very uncommon, even though we pride ourselves on our personal hygiene. Unfortunately, our outward “clean” appearance may be deceiving because we are ultimately ignoring the cleanliness of the most intimate and important parts of our body. Although it may take a few uses to get comfortable using the EcoJet Bidet, once you accustomed to it and realize the benefits firsthand, you will never want to go back to using just toilet paper!

When you look at all the benefits of using the EcoJet, there really is no reason not to at least give it a try. We understand that it’s a foreign concept for us to use a bidet for cleaning up after “dropping off the kids at the pool,” but we created this product with that specifically in mind - to make it less strange to use for new users. What have you got to lose by trying?
